Looking After a Donkey. Looking After a Donkey, by Dorothy Morris. A donkey is perhaps the most charming and cuddly pet you could have: it can also be useful - children can ride it, it can pull a light cart and might even carry your shopping. If you are thinking of getting a donkey or if you already own one, this book will give you all the facts you could possibly need. It begins with choosing your donkey - and what sensible advice! Unless you plan to show your donkey seriously, the most important factor, Dorothy Morris says, is its temperament; then she tells you what other points to look out for in a donkey. She is precise about what accommodation you must provide: good shelter from rain and cold, enough space to exercise in and sufficient food. She discusses how to train your donkey to be ridden or driven; how to show it in the increasingly popular donkey shows, and, if you are attracted to the idea of your mare having a foal, excellent sections on care of mare and foal are included. As are chapters on health care and diagnosis and prevention of most common ailments. It must be heaven to be one of Dorothy Morris's donkeys: they seem to spen a lot of time in her kitchen and one of the key elements in their training is to be cuddled. However, although she is obviously extremely fond of donkeys, the author is firm in her standards of good donkey behaviour and this unique combination makes her book a delight to read whilst also presenting a wealth of knowledge.
