Drawing upon 40 years' experience as an ecological farmer and marketer, Joel Salatin explains with humor and passion why Americans do not have the freedom to choose the food they purchase and eat. From child labor regulations to food inspection, bureaucrats provide themselves sole discretion over what food is available in the local marketplace. Their system favors industrial, global corporate food systems and discourages community-based food commerce, resulting in homogenized selection, mediocre quality, and exposure to non-organic farming practices. Salatin's expert insight explains why local food is expensive and difficult to find and will illuminate a deeper understanding of the industrial food complex. Paperback, 352 pages. SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED TO..., December 18, 2008
Reviewer: DC, Between The Lines Reviews
Joel Salatin has become a bit of hero for a lot of us. He’s gone toe to toe with a wide variety of government entities whom have tried, in one way or another to control him, fine him, or shut him and his family farm down. Luckily for us he found out early on that sometimes, despite the lost sleep, hours away from the farm, and expense, that you can fight back. As he says, “you don’t always win”, but as he illustrates in this book standing up for what you believe in is essential if you want to continue living and working in a lifestyle that should be a given in the “land of the free”. In this book we are welcomed on to the battlefield that has become Joel and his family’s life. Like many others he simply wants to make a living and be legal. Why then should it be so hard to comply? Why are the regulations constantly changed depending on the whim of the latest inspector? And why, oh why, do they always seem to pick on the little guy? Read an learn from a true warrior, who prefers the peace that one can find working with the soil and the animals, along side one’s family, and for the benefit of one’s community.
